Psarantonis's original name is Antonis Ksylouris. This name is after a family nickname "Psara " and Antonis. He plays Cretan music with his lyre (lyra) and embodies a unique sound in his creations. His singing is like no one else's, ranging from mellow whispers, to low singing, from cacophonous bellowing to an incomprehensible moaning. Psarantoni's old albums consisted of him playing lyra with two lutes (laouta) with his son Psarogiorgis usually as one lute player, but he always added another instrument if he could. As time progressed Psarantonis added more instruments to his compositions such as oud, mandolin and bulgari (saz). The use of more instruments, such as a lyraki (a small lyra) accompanied by a vrodolyra (a large lyra that looks like a small cello), allow him to form compositions that are deeper in texture than anyone else's today. I for one, am happy that he plays the way he plays and that he creates a unique and singular mood and experience that is untouched by anyone else.

Ali Farka Toure , Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu
Ali Farka Toure was born Ali Ibrahim Toure in 1939 in the Timbuktu region in Mali, Africa. He was the 10th child born to his mother and the first one to live - thus nicknamed Farka (donkey) because he was 'stubborn enough to survive'.
Ali Farka Toure never had any ambitions to become a 'star', in spite of touring widely in Africa. His musical inspiration has always come from his life on the banks of the Niger river, at the edge of the Sahara desert, and this is where he still thinks his music belongs. It is not just entertainment to him, it is the communication with the spirits surrounding him.
This explains why he backed out from what could have been a blues superstar career after his 1994 album 'Talking Timbuktu', a collaboration with Ry Cooder. The album won a grammy in 1995 and Ali went on world tour, but he was quickly desillusioned by the 'chew-and-spit' cycle of Western audiences. He longed for home and gave up the tour, with no cares that he turned down the potential for more stardom, not to mention dollars.
He is a most respectful artist and his kind of music is just the way music should be. LIBERATED , SORROWFULL and PASSIONATE

Niyaz
Three prominent artists, Azam Ali, best known as the vocalist of the successful world music group Vas, Loga Ramin Torkian, the multi-instrumentalist and composer for the critically acclaimed group Axiom of Choice, and Carmen Rizzo, a two time Grammy Award nominee producer/remixer, have joined forces to create a globe-spanning sound that the trio calls "world music for the 21st century." Known collectively as Niyaz, which means yearning in both Farsi and Urdu, the trio's first eponymous release is a hypnotic, ecstatic, and eminently danceable album that represents the best of both traditional world and electronic music. Every song reflects the multiple cultural and artistic lenses each of these accomplished artists brings to this project and represents a finely-tuned balance of acoustic and electronic music that ushers in a new era of artistic possibilities for Iranian music. All three of these musicians have built impressive individual careers.

SAVE INTERNET RADIO
ACT NOW
http://www.savenetradio.org/
The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! The Internet Radio Equality Act has recently been introduced in both the House (H.R. 2060) and Senate (S. 1353) to save the Internet radio industry. Oi Va Voi - Oi Va Voi
This is the second album of the group that amazed me from their beginning. Having fought their way through a series of trials and tribulations that would have finished off a lesser band, the long-awaited second album (Oi Va Voi) takes their unique mix of global rhythms and club-friendly beats to new heights - bigger, bolder and with more attitude(ital) than anything even their most ardent fans could have imagined. . Tune in and enjoy it!!
